rst. My viewpoint changed completely when I found it could travel 165 miles on a £12-£14 charge.

Our Citroen e-Berlingo review showed some unexpected results. The van’s massive 2,107-litre boot space and improved range of 213 miles proved it could do more than just haul the family around.

Six months of daily driving later, with those handy sliding doors, I’m excited to tell you why this electric van became my family’s surprise favourite. The e-Berlingo might be your next family car if you’re thinking about going electric or want to replace your SUV. Let me share what life with this electric van is really like.

Why We Chose the Citroen e-Berlingo Over SUVs

Most people looking for an electric family vehicle in 2025 automatically go for SUVs. I almost did too, but practical needs took my family in a different direction. We chose the Citroen e-Berlingo not because it was fashionable, but because it made perfect sense in ways no SUV could match.

Our family’s unique requirements

Life with three kids and weekend adventures meant we needed an incredibly versatile vehicle. The e-Berlingo’s van-based design works better than traditional SUVs in many ways.

The sliding doors changed our daily life completely. Parents know the hassle of tight parking spots and kids swinging doors into other cars. The e-Berlingo’s sliding doors solve this problem, though they need some muscle to close.

We couldn’t compromise on space. The car has three individual rear seats with their own ISOFIX point, so three child seats fit side by side easily. Most SUVs can’t do this with their cramped middle seat. The XL model even gives you two extra seats for up to seven people.

The boot space blew us away. The standard M model gives you 641 litres up to the cover, and the XL version has 806 litres. Fold all seats down and you get a massive 4,000 litres—no electric SUV comes close to this.

The cabin gives you 186 litres of storage in various bins and cubbies. This turned out to be perfect for our family’s growing collection of snacks, toys, and sports gear.

The surprising price advantage

The e-Berlingo’s price tag makes it even more attractive than electric SUVs. Starting at £31,240, it costs much less than basic electric SUVs, not to mention seven-seaters like the Kia EV9.

Running costs tell an even better story. Like other EVs, the e-Berlingo doesn’t need road tax and avoids congestion charges in many cities. Company car drivers benefit from low benefit-in-kind tax rates.

Our charging costs really opened my eyes. A full charge from our home wallbox costs £12-14 and takes us 162-170 miles. Around town, one charge lasts about three weeks—much better than a bigger, heavier electric SUV.

Electric van vs electric SUV debate

Electric SUVs dominate EV discussions, but an electric van makes more sense for families in several ways.

People think SUVs offer the best visibility. The truth is, the e-Berlingo’s higher seat and large windows give you a better view than many SUVs with their high sides and stylish but restrictive designs. This makes city driving and parking easier.

Electric vans excel in urban areas. The e-Berlingo handles tight spaces well despite its size. The standard rear sensors and reversing camera make city driving stress-free.

Range anxiety? The 2025 e-Berlingo now goes up to 213 miles (WLTP Combined), perfect for most families’ daily and weekly needs. Some premium electric SUVs go further but cost way more.

Charging works great too. You can charge from 0 to 80% in just 30 minutes at a 100kW DC rapid charging station. This makes longer trips easy with minimal planning.

The driving experience surprised me most. The e-Berlingo feels just like a car—quiet, smooth and relaxing. Quick acceleration makes city driving fun, and you get that high-up view people love about SUVs.

We made our final decision after realising the e-Berlingo is what JML might call “a solution to a problem you didn’t know you had”. It puts practical family needs first instead of looks, giving you space, flexibility and value that other vehicles just can’t match.

First Impressions: Exterior Design and Space

The Citroen e-Berlingo’s boxy shape might not catch your eye right away. But after six months behind the wheel, I’ve grown to love its practical design. This electric vehicle goes beyond its van roots with smart design choices that make family life easier.

The 2025 facelift improvements

The 2025 e-Berlingo got a detailed refresh that lifts its appeal substantially. A complete redesign of the front end shows off Citroen’s new design style, first seen on the e-C3. The new look features a grille and bumper as one panel, paired with striking LED lights. The vehicle now sports a retro-inspired Citroen badge with a black strip that matches the brand’s signature double chevron logo.

The dashboard got a complete makeover with a 10-inch touchscreen and a new adjustable 10-inch digital instrument panel. The system has wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which makes connecting devices much easier than before.

Citroen’s Advanced Comfort seats are a great addition, with special fabric and eye-catching three-colour upholstery. These super-soft seats change how it feels to drive, though you’ll only find them in higher-spec models.

You can get the e-Berlingo in two sizes – M (4.40 metres long) and XL (4.75 metres long), perfect for different family needs. The XL fits up to seven people, making it great for bigger families.

Sliding doors: a game-changer for family life

The sliding side doors are the e-Berlingo’s hidden gem. These doors make getting in and out a breeze when you’re squeezed next to a wall or another car. This happens all the time in packed supermarket lots or tight street parking.

These doors are perfect when you’re juggling kids, shopping bags, or big items in tight spots. The Big Issue called them a “game-changer for access”. They open wide enough to fit child seats, pushchairs, or help elderly passengers without any awkward twisting. This feature alone makes the e-Berlingo worth looking at over regular SUVs. The only small issue is that sometimes you need extra muscle to close them on slopes.

Boot capacity that exceeded expectations

The e-Berlingo’s boot space blew me away when I first got it. The standard five-seater M model gives you 775 litres under the parcel shelf, while the XL offers a massive 1,050 litres. This is a big deal as it means that you get more space than pricier electric seven-seaters like the Peugeot E-5008 (916 litres) and Kia EV9 (828 litres).

The square boot opening has no lip to get in your way, so loading heavy or awkward items is easy. The optional opening rear screen lets you quickly grab things without opening the whole tailgate.

Fold the seats down and the space grows to 3,500 litres in the M model and a huge 4,000 litres in the XL. You won’t need to rent a van for those occasional big moves. I’ve packed everything from bikes to furniture in mine with room left over.

The seats are clever too. You can fold the three back seats flat one by one or all at once. XL models let you take out the back two seats completely for even more cargo space.

This car packs more practicality than most bigger vehicles while staying compact. Coming from regular family cars, seeing how style and space work together has been an eye-opener.

Living with the e-Berlingo’s Electric Range

Range anxiety tops the list of concerns for people looking to buy EVs. My six months with the e-Berlingo helped me find the truth behind the numbers. The experience brought both limitations and pleasant surprises.

Ground range with a family of five

The Citroen e-Berlingo’s official WLTP range stands at 174 miles. Newer 2025 models promise up to 212 miles. All the same, ground performance tells a different story. Our family of five consistently achieves around 145 miles per charge. This range works fine for our weekly routine.

City driving improves efficiency by a lot. Running errands around town in eco mode with maximum regenerative braking sometimes gets us close to official range figures. The e-Berlingo’s regenerative braking system recaptures energy during deceleration. This feature became natural after a few weeks. Selecting the “Brake” setting lets the vehicle recover electricity each time I lift off the accelerator.

Motorway driving changes everything. Range drops at sustained higher speeds. Long journeys taught me to trust the vehicle’s range prediction even as it drops faster than expected. The Citroen becomes pessimistic during quick driving. Mixed driving usually gives us about 130-140 miles before a recharge.

The satellite navigation shows range clearly on the map. You can see exactly how far your current charge will take you. This feature reduces anxiety on longer trips.

How weather affects the Citroen berlingo electric range

Temperature makes a big difference in the e-Berlingo’s performance. Winter months saw our average range decrease to about 144 miles. Summer months improved this to 160+ miles.

Cold weather creates the biggest challenge, especially with motorway driving. These conditions can drop range to around 110-130 makes. The detailed EV Database shows extreme cold (-10°C) with heating could drop highway range to 90 miles.

Several factors affect this seasonal change:

  • Heating system just needs more power (especially without the optional heat pump)
  • Battery chemistry works less efficiently in cold conditions
  • Higher speeds face more air resistance
  • Wet or cold conditions increase rolling resistance

Summer brings better results. Mild conditions without air conditioning can stretch city range to 195 miles. Highway efficiency stays nowhere near that at around 110 miles.

Charging routine that works for us

Our charging routine fits perfectly with family life. A 7kW home wallbox takes about 7 hours 15 minutes for a full charge. Each full charge costs £12-14. The e-Berlingo proves cheap to run.

Daily town driving lets one full charge last about three weeks. Even with occasional longer trips, like our 80-mile family visits, we charge every other week.

Longer journeys make the e-Berlingo’s 100kW DC rapid charging capability shine. You get a 10-80% charge in about 30 minutes, or 26 minutes based on recent data. Planning stops around these rapid chargers works well with natural break points.

Battery charge below 20% slows charging speed by a lot. Daily charging to 80% instead of 100% helps battery health. Full charges happen only before long trips planned for the next day.

Interior Comfort: Beyond the Van Stereotype

Most people see vans as basic boxes with uncomfortable seats and lots of noise. I was ready to give up comfort for practicality when I bought the electric Berlingo. Six months later, this couldn’t be more wrong.

The surprisingly plush seating

My first surprise came as I sat in the driver’s seat. The Citroën Advanced Comfort® seats make long trips amazing with great side support and cushioning. These seats give you better support than regular van seats no matter how far you drive.

The clever padding and structure make all the difference. You get three-colour upholstery that feels much softer than you’d expect from a vehicle with commercial roots. I can drive for hours and step out without the back pain I used to get in our old car.

The back seats are just as good. The three full-size rear seats stand out – all but one of these seats in most vehicles feel like an afterthought, but here each seat gives real comfort. This works great on family trips since no kid feels stuck with the bad seat.

The seats aren’t perfect though. The front ones could use better side support during sharp turns, and taller drivers might find the seat base a bit short for good thigh support. These small issues don’t matter much for a family car.

Noise levels and ride quality

The electric Berlingo’s quietness really stands out. The missing diesel engine changes everything about the driving experience. The electric motor makes a soft whirr that stays in the background, which creates a peaceful cabin.

You might expect other noises to stand out without an engine. They don’t. The e-Berlingo keeps road and wind noise out really well. The solid build stops squeaks and rattles, even on rough roads.

The comfort level beats expectations. Like other new Citroëns, the e-Berlingo rides smoothly. The battery weight actually helps the ride quality compared to diesel models. The car feels stable without the harsh ride you usually get in commercial vehicles.

Families will love how the e-Berlingo drives more like a regular car than a van. The steering feels precise and makes city driving easier than you’d think. Long trips become enjoyable rather than just bearable.

Family-friendly storage solutions

Storage space in the e-Berlingo goes beyond what you’d expect. The cabin has 27 different storage spots that work for everything a family needs:

  • A big glove box with a lid plus an open shelf and a roomy cubby below
  • Big door pockets that fit 1.5-litre water bottles
  • A covered spot on top of the dashboard for small things
  • Two cup holders at the dashboard edges
  • A storage box above the instrument panel
  • A special phone spot with optional wireless charging

These storage spaces add up to 186 litres – that’s more than some car trunks! This smart layout makes life easier, especially with all the stuff families carry even on short trips.

The e-Berlingo also has flip-up picnic tables for back seat passengers. They don’t hold much weight but add a nice touch for families. You won’t need to wonder where to put things like in regular cars.

The thoughtful cabin design, comfortable seats, and smooth ride show this isn’t your typical van. The e-Berlingo gives families a comfortable space that makes trips better, not worse.

Technology and Features Worth Paying For

My time with electric vehicles taught me that not all tech features give you the same value. The e-Berlingo comes loaded with technology, and knowing which features actually make family life better can make a huge difference.

Essential vs optional tech for family use

The electric Berlingo’s new dashboard has a spacious layout that shows quality and reliability. Some features have become must-haves for daily family trips. The 10-inch digital instrument cluster shows clear, custom information about range, navigation, and energy flow. This has become my go-to spot to check battery status.

The responsive rear-view camera with Top Rear Vision function makes parking this big vehicle so much easier. The heated steering wheel on Max trim is worth every penny during winter drives.

The wireless phone charging pad sounds nice but you won’t miss it unless you’re always on the road.

The infotainment system: hits and misses

A 10-inch touchscreen takes centre stage on the dashboard with two infotainment options. The basic My Citroën Play system has wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. You can get connected 3D navigation if you upgrade to My Citroën Drive Plus.

The navigation works well with clear directions on both the screen and dash. It shows traffic trouble spots and gives reliable range info on the UK map.

The system’s menu layout needs work—you’ll find items in unexpected places. The touchscreen can be stubborn, and you need to press harder than you’d expect.

Safety features that impressed us

The e-Berlingo’s safety package is packed with great features:

  • Emergency Braking Assistance stops the car when it spots potential crashes
  • Lane Keeping Assist gently fixes your path without jerky movements
  • Driver Attention Alert helps on long family trips
  • Automatic headlamps with High Beam Assist stop you from blinding other drivers

The head-up display is a game-changer. It shows your speed, speed limits, and cruise control settings while you keep your eyes on the road. This simple feature makes night driving and new routes much safer.

Six Months In: The Unexpected Benefits

My six-month journey with the e-Berlingo has uncovered financial benefits that weren’t obvious during the purchase. The economics and practicality of electric vehicle ownership look completely different now, thanks to several unexpected perks.

Fuel savings compared to our previous car

The numbers tell a compelling story after tracking every penny spent on the e-Berlingo. A complete home charge costs about £12.60, which works out to just 8.52p per mile. The costs drop even more to £3.50-£3.64 per charge with an EV-friendly tariff.

My records show savings of up to £500 compared to our old diesel vehicle over three months. The charging routine is simple – I plug in the e-Berlingo when it hits around 20 miles of range. A full charge from our 7kW home wallbox costs £12-14 and gives us 162-170 miles of range.

One charge lasts about three weeks for our regular town trips. This has cut our monthly transportation fuel budget drastically.

Maintenance simplicity

Electric vans need less maintenance than their traditional counterparts. The e-Berlingo’s design eliminates all but one of these common parts – exhaust systems, fuel delivery components, oil philtres, gears and clutches.

The simple mechanical design leads to smaller service bills. The regenerative braking system helps extend brake life.

The warranty package adds extra security by covering the main vehicle for 3 years/60,000 miles. The battery warranty extends to 8 years/100,000 miles with guaranteed 70% capacity retention.

Versatility beyond family transport

The e-Berlingo shines beyond its family duties. “The Citroen Berlingo is to mountain bikers what the VW Transporter is to surfers” – proof of its appeal to active lifestyle enthusiasts.

Daily tasks become easier too. The ability to lock it while grabbing lunch in town or stopping at the supermarket makes errands more convenient.

Light steering combined with huge windows makes tight space navigation easy. This feature really helps in urban areas where regular vans feel awkward.

Conclusion

Six months with the e-Berlingo has changed my point of view about family transport. My original doubts about picking a van instead of an SUV now seem laughable. This electric van fits our lifestyle perfectly.

The numbers speak for themselves. We spend £12-14 to charge for 165 miles and need to recharge every three weeks with normal use. The van’s space handles everything our family life throws at us easily. Winter weather reduces the range and highway speeds affect how far we can go. Smart trip planning makes these minor issues manageable.

My family loves the sliding doors and the van’s countless storage spaces that simplify our daily routine. The e-Berlingo’s comfort and refinement stand out. Its quiet operation, supportive seats, and car-like handling make each trip enjoyable.

This van proves that practical family transport can be comfortable and affordable. Some people might question our choice of a van over an SUV. Living with the e-Berlingo shows that the unexpected choice often brings the best results.
