Mercedes-Benz has resurrected its performance-themed commercial badge with the UK-exclusive Vito Sport-X, evaluated by John Kendall for Van Fleet World. Created to commemorate 130 years of the German brand's involvement in transport, the Sport-X sits at the summit of the Vito line-up. It arrives strictly as a five-seat crew van based on the Vito Select specification, squaring up against lifestyle-oriented workhorses like the Ford Transit Custom MS-RT and Volkswagen Transporter Sportline. Prices kick off at £56,995 excluding VAT.
Mechanical power comes from a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel generating 190hp and 440Nm of torque available from 1,350rpm. Power drives the rear wheels exclusively via a nine-speed automatic transmission. Official WLTP fuel economy reaches up to 38.7mpg, while the maximum payload tops out at 733kg. On the outside, Mercedes equips the van with aggressive body revisions: a redesigned front bumper featuring an integrated splitter, side skirts, a roof spoiler, gloss-black accents, 19-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, roof rails, and bold bonnet and side decals. The standard paint finish is Alpine Grey, with Arctic White or six metallic shades available as no-cost options. Inside, the usual three-seat front bench is swapped for two bolstered sport chairs trimmed in black synthetic leather and dark suede with contrast orange stitching. Heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, wireless charging, and automatic air conditioning are standard.
On the road, the reviewer praised the Vito Sport-X's dynamic polish. The 190hp diesel delivers muscular acceleration, and the nine-speed automatic shifts smoothly to make progress effortless. Kendall noted that the van handles tidily and offers a comfortable, pleasant cabin environment, with road noise suppressed surprisingly well given the lack of a full partition.
On the downside, Kendall pointed out that the eye-catching decals and motorsport trim mean this is definitely not a van for introverts. Because of its bold aesthetic, crew-only layout, and premium price tag, its appeal for mainstream commercial fleets is narrow. Additionally, while the rear three-seat bench can be removed entirely to free up cargo volume, luggage room is naturally limited when all passenger seats are upright, and there is no protective bulkhead behind the front seats once the rear bench is taken out.
Van Fleet World did not assign a numerical score. Kendall identifies the Vito Sport-X as a focused choice for sole traders, lifestyle-oriented tradespeople, and small business operators who demand a head-turning company vehicle during the working week that can seamlessly double up as a comfortable five-seat family transport over the weekend.
Verdict: The Mercedes-Benz Vito Sport-X offers strong performance, polished road manners, and an upmarket cabin, providing a smart compromise for buyers seeking a high-spec vehicle that balances hard graft with domestic versatility.
